Thursday, March 09, 2006

Hi and Hello from Namche Bazaar (3500m/11500ft).
Now getting cold, ds morning it was 5C, will be colder as we go up - we're estimating our hicamp in d first climb to be at -15C.
I'm techno-loaded this time, with satfon in my pocket, and videocam in my beltbag, camera in my pack, etc.  I sure do hope I get good footages of the place, and the climb.
We did a short acclimatization hike today (spending another nite here), then move to Tengboche tomorrow.  We expect to summit the 21000ft snow mountain around Mar16, depending on d weather and health conditions.
I'll do another email update when I get back to Namche around Mar21-22, this is where I will wait for my main team.
So far all is well, wish us luck in the first climb.  "LA" (co-climber) is worried daw, kuno, altho I'm 100% sure he'll make it, bka ako pa lagnatin as I can see he adapts faster at hi-alt.  We met 2 climbers yesterday, they've stayed 3 days in Namche and 1 is still feeling sick.  So i guess we're doing good, so far.  Hehe, wag lang sana hagdanan-type ung trails coz both of us have knee issues hahaha, talk about getting old ;p
I'll do a satfon update after the first climb, then email update around Mar21-22. I'm still figuring out how to post digi-pix here, I only know Picasa - smtg i only have in my laptop.
Lastly, pls ask your friends to help in the fund-raising, hopefully we get a big and significant charity fund.
Til the next update...
Ciao!  =)

pogi, galingan mo ha. talk of the mountaineering community ka sa this:

Pinoy race on to reach Everest
    By Rainier Allan Ronda
    The Philippine Star 03/14/2006

Will a team of Filipino mountaineers or a lone Pinoy ranger who set out
earlier this month to conquer the highest mountain become the first to
plant the Philippine flag atop Mt. Everest?

The 1st Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition Team or Team Everest will
make a major announcement today of its plans following the flight of
information technology expert Romeo Garduce to Nepal last March 3,
making his bid to carry the country's colors to the mountain's
    snow-covered peak.

It will be recalled that the expedition team, led by former
transportation undersecretary Arturo Valdez, had been in "crisis" the
past week ever since Garduce, who is in his 30s, left for Nepal.

Garduce's planned climb was seen as a direct challenge to the
15-member Team Everest which had announced its bid to be the first to
do so last year with their timetable involving several tune-up climbs
of different alpine mountains in India, Nepal and Europe for the 2007
    actual climb of Everest.

Valdez, in an interview with The STAR last week, admitted that the team
was seriously discussing their options in the face of Garduce's
    departure for Mt. Everest.

While wishing Garduce luck and safety, Valdez revealed the team was
unconcerned with his solo attempt to beat them to the mountain top.

However, he revealed that there were seven members of the team who were
already in Nepal for the team's scheduled tune-up climb of another
mountain in the Himalayan mountain range near Mt. Everest.

He said that the seven members of the team could be spurred by
Garduce's presence in Nepal to climb Mt. Everest ahead of them.

Dr. Ted Esguerra, a rescue doctor of the Philippine Coast Guard and a
member of Team Everest, said that today's announcement was about
"changes" in their scheduled climbing Everest.

"We will announce it tomorrow," Esguerra said in an interview

Esguerra admitted that the "changes" in their schedule were prompted by
    Garduce's coming into the picture.

It was learned that Garduce's climb of Mt. Everest was regarded as a
"commercial" climb of the world's tallest peak, which means that the
climber would have to pay to be included in a three- to five-member
climbing team escorted by "sherpas" and porters and veteran Everest

Commercial climbs of Mt. Everest have recently been offered to people
eager to conquer the 29,800-foot (or 5.6-mile) mountain, and are
regarded as a feature of the "high altitude tourism" being promoted by
    India and Nepal groups.

Esguerra said he and Valdez were due to follow the other members of the
    team later this week.

He said that the whole team was supposed to go together as one but
several of them had pressing matters to attend to; he himself was kept
busy helping out in the recovery and search and rescue efforts
conducted for the victims of the St. Bernard mudslides last February.

"I just came from St. Bernard, Southern Leyte from the recovery and
rescue efforts where the Philippine Coast Guard helped out," Esguerra

Esguerra said that way before Garduce, the team had long been prepared
for the Mt. Everest climb but had chosen to stick to schedule and
    undergo tune-up climbs first.

RP climbers gear up for Mt. Everest
    By Nelson Beltran
    The Philippine Star 03/15/2006

Two members of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition (FPMEE) team are now gearing up for a reconnaissance climb of Mt. Everest as part of their preparations to lead the whole team for its summit bid next year.

FPMEE expedition leader Art Valdez said tough climbers Leo Oracion and Erwin "Pastor" Emata have been in Nepal since February and are about ready to ascend Mt. Everest in May.

"We know it is a big challenge to climb Mt. Everest. It is inherently dangerous. This is why we’re taking precautions by sending Leo and Pastor first this summer. The reconnaissance climb will give them enough experience to help lead the whole team in 2007," said Valdez.

"They are in peak physical condition and they have proven their technical climbing skills, stamina, determination and teamwork on Muztagh-Ata. We are confident that they will be ready for Everest," Valdez also said of the two climbers, who led the FPMEE’s successful assault on the highly technical and demanding slopes of Mt. Muztagh-Ata in the boundaries of China and Pakistan last year.

Oracion and Emata, two of the country’s most respected and prize-winning adventure athletes, have been in Nepal since February to train and acclimatize with the cold weather conditions of the Himalayas.

Valdez will lead a support team, which leaves this month to rendezvous with Oracion and Emata at Mt. Everest base camp by the first week of April. By then, Oracion and Emata should have already been acclimatized with the weather and ready to begin their ascent when the Nepali government opens the path to the Mt. Everest’s peak.

"For now, the government of Nepal is not allowing mountaineers to climb Everest since the terrain is still considered unsafe," said team leader Reggie Pablo from Olongapo.

Other members of the expedition team are Dr. Ted Esguerra from Davao, Ariel Ambayec, Jong Narciso, Choy Aquino and Noelle Wenceslao from Metro Manila, Levin Nayangahan from Ifugao, Karina Dayondon from Bukidnon and Janet Belarmino from Nueva Vizcaya. They are supported by Philippine Airlines, ABS-CBN, Stratworks, MedCentral, National Sports Grill, Fitness First, PowerUp, Rudy Project, FedEx, Kodak and the Philippine Accident Manager’s Insurance.

"This year’s reconnaissance expedition and the 2007 Unity climb are a chance for the FPMEE to bring glory to the Philippines. We will also be proud to have the first Asean women to reach the summit of Mt. Everest next year," said Valdez, from Bacolod. "We hope to lift the spirit of Filipinos and bring hope to our nation by showing that all things are possible as long as we are united in one cause."

The team will be split into two groups starting from different points for their summit assault in 2007. One group will ascend from the north in Tibet along the Rongvuk Glacier where the legendary George Mallory once began his climb in 1924 while the other team comes from the south via the Khumbu Glacier, tracing the path Everest pioneers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay took in 1953.
