Off to Basecamp!

Hi folks,

Today (Mar28) is my last day of rest, and tomorrow, we'll start trek for Ev BC.
Our supply caravan is already on the way to BC, and our advanced party
will soon setup our camp - this will be our homebase, our 'home sweet home' for the
next 2 months. Last year in Cho Oyu Advanced BC, there are around 200 climbers,
this year in Ev BC, we're expecting more than 300 climbers on-site. (I was told there was 1 season with more than 800 haha). This is gonna be an interesting little tent village life =)

We expect the Khumbu Icefall (the way to C1) to be 'passable' sometime between end of wk1-April (if lucky) to mid-April, depending on formation of the seracs, iceblocks and size of the crevasses. The so-called 'Icefall Doctors' (Sherpa employees of Sagarmatha Park) left Namche 2 days ago, and are expected to start work on the safety lines and ladders in the Icefall sometime 1st wk of April.

I expect to be in BC in 6-8 days, depending on our pace and mood :)
I'll do an update then (by satfon).

Cheers!

(Wow, I'll be missing the tropical summer in the Phils, o well ... )

    sir,

kidding aside, hanga ako sa yo sir. usapan ka ngayon ng mountaineering community, at kahit sa trabaho at sa inuman.;) tama ka, ang hirap pag alam ng lahat ang climb mo. it's like taking a bar exam na lahat ng tao nagbabantay sa pagpasa or pagbagsak mo...pero sir, scaling E isn't an easy task...and now, it's no longer between u & d mountain. it's also bet u & ur benefactors,u & ur competitors (hate to use d term pero yun ang lumalabas), u & ur detractors (challenging, isn't it?), bet u & ur sponsors,it's between u & us (proud pinoys na nag-aabang sa pagbabalik mo).

sir, i'm just intrigued. y didn't u join d phil team in d first place? didn't they invite u to join d team? (they should have...u could be an asset to d group) or it's ur choice...to be independent? i'm sorry, i'm not a mountaineer & don't know much about montaineering & d mountaineering community in the country. ive just read much about u a while ago and i think it would be better if u summit everest with d phil team. they really need a strong mountaineer like u. anyway, u take care sir.
    good luck!

    wannabe a montaineer

Ho-hum! Pare, you're such a major kiss-ass! I bet you are no mountain climber. You more like a social climber riding on waves. Stop patronizing Romy by telling him to focus. He knows what to do. You on the other hand should focus on yourself. Benchwarmer!

Katree, you are the cliche of the century--a certified groupie. Have you been reading to many fan magazines?

Both of you are poseurs! An insult to true-blue mountaineers. If you are real mountaineers, you wouldn't talk like that.

    To Anonymous,

Helllloooooooo! This is a blogsite and a free country too! Rule no. 1 in blogging: "Agree to disagree." That's why comments are varied. This is no gushsite for Romy. Hypocrisy central if you ask me. People are welcome to say what you want to hear and refuse to listen to the other side of the coin? What a blog!

I don't care much about this whole Romy and other group hooplah you are talking about. I am here to boldly comment against people who under the guise of praising and making all those patronizing "rah rahs" to Romy are actually just sowing intrigues, rumors and put people down. In effect, such attitude divides the mountaineering community--NOT A GOOD THING AT ALL--and any mountaineer worth his/her salt would know this.

I am not being arrogant. I just chose to say things that people would rather sweep under the rug and if you cannot hack it, I'm so sorry for you.

P.S. Don't tell me to stay away from this site. You don't own this nor pay for my broadband.

so there, blog all you want self-righteous mountaineer. anyway, your right, we dont pay for your broadband. you just don't know how romi feels reading your comments. im just reminding you that this is the blogsite for his updates, and not some forum to give a grain of your salt. you comment on what's written on the blog, not on other people's comments. but then again, youre paying as you said so no one can force you not too.
ps. you don't know how many bloggers are signing as anonymous here, not just one.

any which way or whatever happens to your climb, i support your cause. all mountaineer's dream, of course, is to climb that bloody mountain. anyway it boils down on who's the first pinoy to do that and romy you have the chance to do it. as to the philippine team, like jong et al, hope too you can go on top of ev next year. good luck to you all!!!

    to sir romi's supporters:

let bipolar chick write what she wants to say. her comments only show that sir romi is now D MAN.;) after all, her messages make this site more interesting. if u don't like her biased comments, u better ignore them and address ur msg instead to sir romi.

katree, thanks 4 d info...but i need facts. (demanding po ba?) thanks anyway! u're right, strength isn't enough.(CLICHE...but true. hehehe!)

SIR ROMI, just take it one step at a time...it's d best way to move on. just raise d phil flag when u get to d top and get down asap;)
    thanks 4 d inspiration.

Ano ba kayo? Nakakalungkot at nakakaasiwa kayo. Puro pandaraot ang nababasa ko rito.

I am a mountaineer myself, not a hard core climber like Garduche here or the the guys from the National Expedition, but i believe as a mountaineer this endeavor should be above such arguments.

Why is Romy's climb spawning so much debate? And why are his supporters saying nasty things about the other team? In fairness to them, i have not read or seen them say negative things about this. This is not the spirit of this endeavor and i don't think they should be portrayed as competitors.

Corny as it sounds, kailangan mag-kaisa tayo at suportahan silang lahat.

    Baryotik

You are indeed baryotik with your ass of a question.

Go ask Jeffrey. He might be able to supply you with answers. Ha ha ha

  • At 12:52 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    baryotik

if they all reach d summit of everest, perhaps lahat sila may dalang philippine flag. but d phil team carries d name of d country. si romi, dale at kung sino pa, dala lang ang sariling pangalan at sponsor nila. abangan mo at siguradong may kapuso flag pang iwagayway si garduce. si dale, wala pa masyadong experience yan. pareho lang silang papansin at agaw eksena ni romi. best example of crab mentality. sige mauna kayo. yabang nyo. mabilis kayong babagsak! GOODLUCK!

  • At 1:21 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

been following this blog for a while. but what i'm really waiting for is some update from The Climber. baka naman ayaw na nyang sumulat kasi ang sagwa na nitong blog nya?! ANYWAY, MR. GARDUCH, YOU HAVE ALREADY STIRRED THE FILIPINO SPIRIT. I AM GRATEFUL, AND WISH YOU THE BEST, ON EVEREST AND IN SMALLER THINGS!

  • At 5:09 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Romi is not able to make an update as often as he wants because there's no internet access for him in basecamp (yet). His satfon has limited battery life as well so he can't really relay an eloquent update. Let's just wait how soon he can communicate to us.

Some points I'd like to point out:Romi has North Face and GMA as sponsors. The Phil team has PAL, Summit H2O, Fitness First, Coleman, ABS-CBN, Mozcom,Kodak,Natl Sports Grill&Globe. Yes, these guys need sponsors to pay for the climb. Kaya walang magmamalinis kesyo kaninong flag ang iwawagayway. Its a necessary evil ika nga. Another point, in a Phil Star article which came out last Mar 14 which says Garduce's climb is regarded as commercial, defined in d papers as escorted by spherpas and porters. How quick of the FPMEE to call for a recon climb and hire the biggest sherpa company to escort its 2 climbers. So, bottomline whatever means that suit a climber or climbers should be given due respect. Don't form any judgements just because there's too many media players. All of these highlights mountaineers and mountaineering in the Philippines. Now, that's not so bad at all, right?

    JD

  • At 4:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Right sir. that's why for those people who do not know Garduce or have little knowledge about him, do not judge to quickly. Lets just support that whoever filipino who made it first on the summit of chomulungma, is still a national pride. Its not the group affliation or what, its the climber's identity - being FILIPINO!

  • At 3:15 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    shemps,

  • At 3:17 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    JD,

  • At 3:51 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

ano bang kinaiinggit or kinagagalit ng iba? pagkakaroon ba ng sponsors ni romy o sa "first" issue pa rin? bakit ba parang malaking issue ang pag sponsor k romy ng gma7 gayong napakaraming sponsors ng phil team? check their official site. i hate to compare them bec some of d members of d phil team are my friends. they all need some sponsors.

kung sa "first" issue naman, wag kayong mamroblema if one of d guys or all of them make it to d summit. madami pang first. isama mo gf or wife mo, first pinoy couple yun! isama mo ang askal mong buhay sa summit, first din yun! magsummit ka sa everest ng nakayapak. first din yun...di lang sa pinas! siguradong sa gagawin mo, ang gma at abs-cbn ay mapagkakaisa mong magsponsor sa yo. mag-isip ka, marami pang first. sa ngayon, suportahan na lang muna natin ang lahat ng pinoy mountaineers. hindi biro ang klima don. marami ng sherpas na nagkasakit. may ibinaba na at may namatay. our men really need our prayers and support. wala tayong maitutulong kundi palakasin ang loob nila.

  • At 4:35 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

sir romi, ok ba tayo dyan? marami bang magandang chicks dyan? he!he!he! ingat po. sana di kayo magkasakit. nasaan na po ang kwento nyo?

    bipolar chick,

    shemp at mike:

Ang ilan sa mga naakyat nya ay Mt Fiji, Karakoram, annapurna circuit, K2 basecamp, etc..Kilimanjaro (2003, highest in Africa), Mt Elbrus (2004 highest in Europe), Aconcagua (2005 highest in Sth America) and Cho Oyo (2005- an 8,000 mtr peak also 6th highest). Bakit napili nya ang Everest this year? Because its the next logical step after hitting an 8,000m peak. Kung baga naka-plano, at hindi pabigla-bigla.

  • At 4:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Correct ka dyan pre! its part of the "grand plan" of sir romi. its the pressure created by the big group themselves coz they made the announcement to climb E on 2007. tapos ngayon ginagawa nilang malaking issue pagclimb ni sir romi this season. why is it a big issue if sir romi decided to climb E this season? whose gonna say he will surely make it to the top or the other climbers for that matter? why focus on sir romi alone eh d lang naman sya ang magaattempt na pinoy? thats why we pray for all our filipino climbers out there. ang mahalaga lang suportahan natin kahit na sino mauna sa kanila. but what appeals to me personally is the climb for a cause isssue. I believe this cause.

That is why I wonder why she laughs at my Kota climb. It may be nothing compared to what Romi and others have reached but is she the one to mock me?

anonymous pwe talks like a cheap gal too!

  • At 4:15 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

What ugliness. I'm sure the mountaineering community agrees they should be above such divisive competition.

What has caused this? This should be a shining moment for Pinoy mountaineering but now people are reducing it to a race. I'm sure all parties have sacrificed and workd hard -- and will be sacrificing their lives to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.

I've never seen such a sorry display of CRAB MENTALITY. Who's at fault here? The climbers? I'm sure they are all passionate about this and are just getting caught up in the network war.

I know some of the members of the National expedition and they are hardly the rich kids and villains portrayed by some comments here. When those guys announced their Everest expedition, it was never a race. It was and still is a team effort to prove that Pinoys can.

I also have on occasion spoken with Romi about his passion for the mountains, but i have to question his timing and delicadeza -- the team had already announced their intent to climb, yet out he comes on GMA claiming he will be the first Pinoy to climb Mt Everest. Unless he convinces me otherwise (and arguments that Everest is for everyone won't wash), i think this is CRAB MENTALITY in action. Romi threw the challenge because he knew that a team had already announced and began preparations when he came out in GMA drumbeating his own attempt.

I just hope he's up to the challenge he posed himself. As it is, he admitted to me he is a slow climber and likes to keep his own pace, so let's see how well he does in a race he himself created.

And talk about hedging your bets, why is the north face supporting both teams? They are pitting Pinoys against Pinoys! Tsk, tsk.

    Sisyphus

SO D ISSUE IS...WHO FIRST MADE D ANNOUNCEMENT TO SUMMIT EVEREST??? GANUN BA YUN???

had i announced publicly (in 2000) my intention to summit everest in 2010, d national team, romeo garduce, dale abenojar at lahat kayo ay walang karapatang pumanik sa everest before 2010? it's CRAB MENTALITY BA IN ACTION? inunahan nyo kasi ako e, alam nyo namang magsusummit ako ng 2010. dapat sa 2011 na kayo magsummit. is that what other people are trying to say? goodness! let d bold ones execute their own plans...sa tamang panahon na gusto nila. baka naman sila yung tipo ng tao na tahimik na nagpaplano at di na kailangan ng announcement several years b4 d execution.

THE NORTH FACE KA BA O BENCH? whew uli! (FYI, sisyphus, d nat'l team dropped the north face's sponsorship.)

GUYS, WHILE WAITING 4 ROMI'S UPDATES, TRY TO VISIT PAUL & FIONA ADLER'S WEBSITE. (www.adlers.com.au) very inspiring. pareho silang south east ridge nila romi. and i'm sure nagkikita kita sila sila sa EBC at baka makabalita tayo. PEACE TO ALL.

Sisyphus, your right in one point. Romi never claimed to be the strongest nor the fastest. Not just in mountaineering but even in adventure sports. And that's where the beauty lies, coz how can someone who's unassuming in physique, someone seemingly ordinary and yet achieve all those peaks. You call that commitment to achieving your dream. That no matter what stands as a road block, a committed person overcomes it. You focus on your objective. What he did may not be a popular choice to many knowing that he's up against a 'Phil team', but you don't forget about your dream just because someone has the same goal as you have and have announced it to the world. Focus is the name of the game, if your grand plan tells you 2006 is the right timing, then you try it in 2006, with no guarantee of success, of course. But even then, you just have to push through with it. Now if your grand plan says 2007, you work your way towards increasing your success rate and not be distracted.

    Mr. Romeo Garduce,

Right after I've heard about your climb to Everest and the controversies from a friend in the Phils, I started looking for your official website to drop a line. Unfortunately, you're not able to keep us posted man. Anyway, Mr. Garduce! we Filipinos in Canada are proud of you. I know you can make it to the world's highest summit.

Let me leave a message to the visitors of your blog.
I was supposed to invite my Canadian friends to visit Mr. Garduce's blog, pero nakakahiya.

Mr.Garduce, again, we are proud of you!

Kung ang palagay nyo "commercial" climber at "scene-stealer" lang si Garduch, kahit anong sabihin namin sa inyo to convince you otherwise (short of threatening to push you off Mt. May mananalo lang by default.

At huli.

May mauuna't-mauuna.

enough about crab mentality, commercial climbing and first issues.

    safety first. ingat.

Romeo Garduce’s GMA7: Getting ready for the final assault
/> “One of our teams is almost at Base Camp,” reports Romeo
Garduce’s home team. “Jiggy Manicad, Gemmo Soho, and Allan Gutierrez
arrived at Gorak Shep today and are scheduled to make the trek to Base Camp
tomorrow. The other team, Dennis Mariano and Alfredo Pacursa Jr. arrived at
Namche late this afternoon. They should be at Base Camp in about a week.”

Romi also arrived safely back to Base Camp today. Last
Wednesday, the Philippine climber reached Camp 2, where he spent two
nights. “I had a good walk to the end of the Khumbu Glacier,” he told
    his team via sat phone.

Romi will spend the next few days
resting in BC before attempting to reach Camp 3 – which will serve as his
acclimatization climb before his final assault says his team manager. /> source:www.mounteverest.net

Philippines Everest quest update Butch Sebastian, co-leader of the National
Everest expedition told the Philippine Daily Inquirer earlier this week
that Garduce refused an invitation to join the expedition in 2003.
Apparently, the two climbs have now sparked a “network war” between
ABS-CBN, which is supporting the Philippine team, and GMA-7, which is
supporting Garduce. Although both teams reject competition, a friendly race
seems to be on. Garduce reported he was among the first to C1 - before the
ice fall was officially finished and before the snow storm hit the
mountain. Romi also said he reached Camp 2 Wednesday and spent two nights
there. Back in BC, he plans to go to C3 early next week. If all goes well,
he'll be positioned for a summit push at the first weather window (usually
around May 10). Leo Oracion and Erwin Emata climbed the icefall last week,
hoping to reach C2 as well. All climbers however stress safety first.

Here’s the latest update from Nepal:

Romi: At around 2:30pm (4:45pm Manila) Romi arrived back at Base Camp after staying at Camp 2 for the last two nights, total trip took 4 days. He will rest for another 4-5 days before attempting to reach Camp 3 (should take 6 days to complete). So far he has passed the deadly Khumbu Ice Fall 4 times. Let’s pray for his continued safety. Yesterday he spent half the day trekking towards the end of the Khumbu Glacier which is part of the trail to Camp 3. The return trip from Camp 2 to Base Camp took just one day. At the rate he’s going the earliest he should be able to leave for his final assault is the 3rd week of May (don’t worry May has 5 weeks).

Crab mentality describes a way of thinking best described by the phrase "if I can't have it, neither can you."

By pulling people like Romy down, you are exhibiting that mentality. Kaya tigilan na.

Malapit na Romy, konti na lang. Good luck sayo at mabuhay ka (literal, hehe).

Philippine climbers: One less in the game

Dale Abenojar the fourth man trying to become the first Philippine on the summit of Everest this year, is apparently out of the Game. Francis Lim has told ExplorersWeb that Harry Kikstra spotted Abenojar descending on yak-back a few days ago.

According to Harry, Dale had intended to join the 7Summits/7Summits-club team this year, but Kikstra had to refuse his application, since the Philippine lacked sufficient climbing experience.

Meanwhile Romi Garduce is doing much better. Romi arrived at Camp 3 last Saturday according to his blog. However, the Philippine triathlon runner reckoned this was the toughest day of his expedition so far .

“It was like climbing a wall,” he reported. Camp 3 was the last stage of his acclimatization process. After some rest back in BC he says he will be ready for a summit bid.
